
This essay is about why maths has always been the cheapest subject to be good at, and why the thing it now leads to costs a great deal more than a pencil.
Every school subject sends your parents a bill. Most of them just don’t break it down for you. Chemistry wants a lab. Music wants an instrument, and somebody free on Saturday mornings to drive you to the lesson. Essays want a childhood of being read to — ten years of free tutoring, dressed up as bedtime.
Maths wants a pencil.
That’s the whole bill. You can do serious mathematics on the back of a receipt, and nobody can tell from the working whether you did it at a desk or on a bus. Which is why maths is quietly full of broke kids.
Nobody can argue you out of a proof
The cheapness gets all the attention. I think the bigger draw is something else. Maths tells you when you’re right. It doesn’t need an adult’s permission to do it.
Picture being twelve in a house where the rules move without notice. The same thing gets a laugh on Monday and a row on Tuesday. The grown-ups tell the story of last week wrong, and you were standing right there when it happened. Now hand that kid a proof.
The proof doesn’t have moods. It isn’t different today. Nobody can look them in the eye and tell them it says something else. They can check it themselves, at eleven at night, with no help from anyone, and simply know. Then they can keep that somewhere nobody can get at it.
I don’t think that’s a small thing. I think it might be the whole thing. Maths isn’t only the subject a poor kid can afford. It’s the subject that holds still, and if not much else in your life holds still, that pull is enormous.
The pattern turns up everywhere I’ve been
So the sharp, broke kids go into maths. I grew up poor in London, and I’ve since spent time in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Guatemala City, Bogotá and Manila. Same story in all six. Different languages, same kid at the back, three chapters ahead of everyone, because the problems are the one thing that’s always there.
That’s six cities and a lifetime of stories, not data. I have no numbers, and I’d be suspicious of anyone who said they did.
Here’s what nobody mentioned to any of us: the ladder is shorter than it looks.
The bill arrives at twenty-two
Entry costs a pencil. Exit costs about a decade.
You get recruited on the first price. That one is honest, advertised, and close to zero. The second price never comes up: years of low pay after school, and the people you’d need to know to turn all those qualifications into actual money. Partly that’s because the people best placed to quote it are the ones who never had to pay it.
And where you end up is fine! Teaching, statistics, working out insurance risk for a living: real jobs, stable, respectable, the kind that make your family proud of you at weddings. They also sit well below where the same brain lands with a family behind it. Nobody lied. The subject kept every promise it made. It just made fewer promises than you thought it had.
There’s a way off the ladder, and it’s a browser tab
Now the good news, and I do think this is good news.
Every web browser on earth has a place inside it where you can type code and run it on the spot. It’s called the JavaScript console. Right-click on any page, hit Inspect, and you’re in. No licence, no install, no permission, no adult, no money. A sharp fifteen-year-old who ended up doing maths because maths was the affordable option can be running real code within the minute. And writing code pays what proving theorems does not.
It’s the same trick maths pulled. Cheap. You can check it yourself, without asking anybody. You type the thing, it works or it doesn’t, and the machine has no opinion about who your parents are.
I find that genuinely cheering. Then I think about what it actually needs, and I stop finding it cheering.
But it charges rent on the room
Not the machine. Or not only the machine, which is the part everyone talks about.
It needs a desk, or something you can pretend is a desk. A chair. A socket that works, and power that stays on. A couple of hours where nobody else wants the table for dinner, ironing, homework or a card game. And quiet — not silence, just enough calm to hold a half-finished idea in your head while somebody walks through the room. When you’re learning to build things, a half-finished idea is the only kind you ever have.
A phone won’t cover it. I know everyone has a phone. But you cannot sit at a phone for three hours. Everything that makes it good on the bus makes it hopeless for building.
A pencil asks for none of this, and that is the entire point of a pencil. It works on the floor. It works on the bus. It works in ten-minute scraps of time stolen between whatever else people want from you. Of everything in this essay, it’s the only tool that doesn’t care what room it’s in.
Which is the part that gets me. The kid this whole essay is about is the one who fell for maths because home didn’t hold still. That is exactly the kid with no quiet corner and no free evening. The thing that pulled them into maths is the same thing that keeps them there.
So the new ladder pays better than the old one, and it’s harder to get onto. Worse, the moment that decides who gets on has moved somewhere nobody is watching. It isn’t admissions. It isn’t the scholarship, or the exam. It happens years before any of those, in whether the house had a corner that was yours for two hours and a socket that worked. I don’t know how you’d pay for that. I’m not sure many of the people handing out money know it’s the thing to pay for.
Maths was cheap because it never asked about the room you were standing in. The new one asks for the room.
